Prostate Cancer Gibraltar Annual Meeting Highlights Progress and Future Plans
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 23rd September, bringing together members, supporters, and partners to review the charity’s achievements and outline the path ahead.
Chairman Joe Holliday stressed that the charity’s mission remains unchanged, that is to advocate for the highest quality of care and support for men affected by prostate cancer and their families. Awareness continues to be the main objective, but he also highlighted the excellent working relationship with the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) and the vital role of long-term corporate partner The Kusuma Trust, which continues to provide crucial financial backing for various projects.
One of the standout announcements was the introduction of robotic surgery in Gibraltar, a groundbreaking development for the GHA. Initially focused on urology and gynaecology, this new approach represents a major leap forward in surgical care for the community. This project is being funded by The Kusuma Trust, Prostate Cancer Gibraltar and GHA.
Treasurer Elio Chevasco informed the members of the state of finances during 2024, highlighting various key items of income and expenditure.
The AGM also reflected on the importance of support services not just for patients but also for families, especially wives and partners, who often carry much of the emotional burden. Committee member Lidia Baldachino was praised for her dedicated counselling and support work.
Looking ahead, Prostate Cancer Gibraltar will continue its strong calendar of awareness and fundraising events, during The Walnut Campaign. Members were encouraged to volunteer and bring along friends and family to help make these initiatives a success.
In closing, the committee reaffirmed its commitment to improving patient outcomes, raising awareness of PSA testing for men over 50, and ensuring Gibraltar remains at the forefront of cancer care through innovation, support, and community engagement.5
