Walnut Awareness Day: A Successful Initiative by Prostate Cancer Gibraltar
On Saturday 16th November 2024, Prostate Cancer Gibraltar (PCG) hosted its Walnut Awareness Day opposite the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned.
The event aimed to promote awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection, drawing significant support from the public.
Members of the public visited the PCG’s stand to learn about prostate cancer and the life-saving PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test, a simple blood test recommended for men over 50. Information on how to book a PSA test, now more accessible through a dedicated email system at prostate@gha.gi, was readily available to visitors.
PCG highlighted that early detection can be the difference between life and death. Since the introduction of the streamlined email system in collaboration with the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), over 1,300 men have already undergone PSA testing. This has been an important step in saving lives through timely diagnoses.
The Walnut Awareness Day forms part of PCG’s broader Walnut Campaign, which includes various events throughout November, such as the recent Fun Walk and upcoming initiatives like Quiz Night, the Wine Tasting Dinner, the Fun Run and the Shave Off.
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar continues to urge men to take their health seriously and get tested. “A simple PSA test can save your life. Early detection is key,” a PCG representative said.
