Shave-Off Day 2025: A Powerful Community Effort for Prostate Cancer Awareness

On Saturday 29th November 2025, The Piazza came alive with energy, commitment, and community spirit as Prostate Cancer Gibraltar held its annual Shave-Off Day—a key event in the Walnut Campaign dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health and the importance of early detection.

This year’s Shave-Off Day was one of the most successful to date, thanks to the incredible support of government representatives, the Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service, volunteers, families, and members of the public. From morning until early afternoon, the area was filled with people showing solidarity, learning about prostate health, and taking part in the symbolic moustache shave-off.

Government Leaders Lead by Example

The presence of local leaders added a meaningful dimension to the event.

  • Minister Leslie Bruzon, who last year publicly shaved his beard to raise awareness, once again led by example this year. His participation highlighted not only his ongoing commitment to men’s health but also the importance of repeating the message every November.

  • Deputy Mayor Nicholas Guerrero also joined the shave-off, drawing enthusiastic applause from the crowd. His involvement helped elevate the visibility of the campaign and encouraged conversations about early testing and proactive health checks.
Their public support demonstrated the significance of prostate cancer awareness at a governmental and civic level, further reinforcing the message that early detection saves lives.

Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service Show Unwavering Support

One of the highlights of the day was the strong participation of the Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service (GFRS). A large group of firefighters arrived in full uniform, proudly wearing the moustaches they had grown throughout November for the Walnut Campaign. Their presence attracted widespread attention, turning Main Street into a dynamic centre of awareness and community engagement.

Many firefighters later joined the shave-off, symbolising solidarity and taking the opportunity to encourage men—especially those over 50 or with family history—to book their PSA test. Their enthusiasm and willingness to stand with the charity once again proved how deeply rooted this cause is within Gibraltar’s emergency services.

A Celebration of Awareness, Support, and Community Spirit

Throughout the morning, hundreds of people passed through The Piazza, stopping to watch the shave-off, speak with volunteers, and learn more about prostate cancer symptoms, testing, and early detection. Donations were received both on-site and online, and the event generated significant visibility across social media.

The strong turnout and broad participation made this year’s event a tremendous success. The combination of civic leaders, first responders, volunteers, and community members standing side by side sent a powerful message: when Gibraltar comes together, awareness spreads, lives are saved, and stigma fades.
