This morning, the Deputy Mayor hosted the official launch of the Prostate Cancer Gibraltar Walnut Campaign 2025 at the Mayor’s Palace in City Hall, in the presence of Minister Santos and distinguished guests.
The Deputy Mayor addressed the gathering and praised the work done by Prostate Cancer Gibraltar to increase awareness of this disease.
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar Chairman Joe Holliday delivered a heartfelt address, expressing gratitude to the Deputy Mayor for hosting the reception and reflecting on the charity’s continued mission since its registration in 2011 — to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection.
Mr. Holliday highlighted the success of the collaboration between Prostate Cancer Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA), noting that since the introduction of the PSA testing protocol in November 2022, over 1,600 men have taken advantage of the easy-access screening via prostate@gha.gi. He reiterated the importance of regular testing, reminding men over 50 to check their PSA every two years or annually if results are borderline.
The speech also celebrated key milestones, including the acquisition of vital medical equipment such as the BK3000 Transperineal Targeted Biopsy system and the MALDI-TOF microbiology analyser, both co-funded with the Kusuma Trust. These investments have transformed diagnostic capabilities, resulting in faster and more accurate patient care.
Mr. Holliday extended special thanks to The Kusuma Trust for their continued generosity and support, the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission for their successful “Free the Knee” initiative held annually, and Cancer Relief Gibraltar for their invaluable support to patients and families.
The Chairman also announced exciting developments ahead — including a major joint project with the GHA and Kusuma Trust to be revealed later this year, and plans to mark World Prostate Cancer Day on 11th June 2026.
He commended the young Gibraltarian students participating in the “Dash for the Tache” challenge, who will collectively run 2,700 kilometres this November to raise awareness and funds.
The morning was filled with warmth, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the cause. Prostate Cancer Gibraltar remains dedicated to saving lives through awareness, early testing, and collaboration — and encourages every man over 50 to take that vital step: check your PSA.
