Reassurance, Transparency and Moving Forward with PSA Testing
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar (PCG) recently held a well-attended Buddies meeting, bringing together members, clinicians and laboratory representatives to openly discuss the introduction of the new PSA testing equipment and to address any member’s concerns.
PCG would like to sincerely thank Mr James Allen, consultant urologist, for attending and for the professional, clear and reassuring way in which he addressed the floor. His explanations were invaluable in helping everyone better understand the new system.
We are also very grateful for the presence of Dr Hamish Thomson, Natalie Soiza, and her team, whose attendance provided additional clinical reassurance and technical clarity. Having the full team present allowed members to ask questions directly and receive informed, consistent answers.
Addressing Concerns About the New PSA Testing System
We recognise that for some Buddies, any change in PSA testing can understandably raise doubts or anxieties. PSA results are deeply personal and play a crucial role in monitoring prostate health, so confidence in the testing process is essential.
To directly address these concerns, Mr Allen kindly offered PCG Buddies the option of undertaking monthly PSA tests over a three-month period, allowing individuals to establish a new personal baseline using the updated equipment. This approach was widely welcomed and provides a practical, reassuring way to compare results over time.
Several Buddies have already expressed that this offer has significantly increased their confidence in the new testing process.
Positive Feedback from the Buddies
Following the meeting, PCG has received positive feedback from those who attended. Many members commented on how reassuring it was to have open explanations, direct access to professionals, and a clear plan moving forward.
While a small number of Buddies still have queries—which is entirely understandable—the option of consecutive monthly testing is expected to resolve remaining concerns and provide peace of mind.
PCG has written to all Buddies to encourage anyone with lingering doubts to take advantage of the three-month PSA testing offer. We are currently liaising with Mr Allen to coordinate how these tests will be scheduled over the coming months, and we will keep members fully informed as soon as arrangements are confirmed.
On behalf of Prostate Cancer Gibraltar, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to:
All Buddies who attended and contributed thoughtfully to the discussion
Mr James Allen for his professionalism, openness and continued support
Dr Hamish Thomson, Ms Natalie Soiza and the laboratory team for their reassuring presence.
Meetings like this reinforce the strength of the PCG community and our shared commitment to support, clarity and informed decision-making.
Further updates will be shared shortly.
Together, we move forward — informed, supported and united.
