Prostate Cancer Gibraltar Supports The New Robotic Surgery at GHA
Presentation of the New Robotic Surgery Project at GHA for Sponsors
Yesterday marked a historic moment for healthcare in Gibraltar as invited guests gathered at St Bernard’s Hospital to witness the presentation of a new state-of-the-art surgical robot. This project has been made possible thanks to a major contribution from the Kusuma Trust, alongside fundraising efforts and support coordinated by Prostate Cancer Gibraltar, with additional sponsorship from local companies and individuals.
The Minister for Health, the Hon. Gemma Arias-Vasquez, made arrangements to bring together the GHA leadership team, medical professionals, sponsors and supporters who have helped turn this ambitious project into reality.
Inside the Theatre: A First Look at the Robot
The visit began at the Kusuma Trust Robotic Surgery Suite, where guests were given a demonstration of the robot’s capabilities. The surgical team explained how robotic platforms are structured into three key components:
The patient cart – the unit positioned beside the patient, equipped with multiple robotic arms (including a high-definition 3D camera and working instruments).
The vision and computing system – providing magnified, high-precision imaging and control.
The surgeon’s console – where the surgeon operates remotely using hand controls and foot pedals, viewing a highly magnified 3D image of the surgical field.
The level of precision demonstrated was remarkable. To illustrate the robot’s accuracy and dexterity, the surgical team used an orange, showing how the robotic instruments can perform delicate movements with minimal invasiveness and exceptional control.
Guests were invited to sit at the console to appreciate the immersive 3D magnified vision and the intuitive controls. It was clear that this technology represents not simply new equipment, but a significant evolution in how surgery can be delivered in Gibraltar.
This robotic platform will be utilised across a range of surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Urology, Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal and Gynaecology.
A Shared Vision Made Possible
During the reception that followed, speakers reflected on how the project came to fruition. What began as a discussion with senior clinical leaders at the hospital soon developed into an ambitious goal: to bring robotic surgery capabilities to Gibraltar within a few months.
However, the cost of such advanced technology was far beyond what Prostate Cancer Gibraltar alone could fund. The Kusuma Trust stepped forward with a substantial and exceptional contribution — well beyond what is typically granted — recognising the long-term value this investment would bring to Gibraltar’s healthcare system.
Additional funds were raised thanks to the generosity of corporate sponsors and private individuals, who were all in attendance at this event. The response from attendees was absolutely amazing.
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar thanked the Minister for Health, the Hon. Gemma Arias-Vasquez, and the GHA team for their vision, commitment and determination in bringing the project to completion. Particular recognition was given to key medical professionals who played a leading role in shaping and delivering the project, namely Dr Hamish Thomson, Dr James Allan and Dr Andrew Gordon.
A Reception hosted by Peter J. Isola Foundation
Following the visit to the Kusuma Robotic Surgery Suite at St Bernard’s Hospital, guests were invited by the Peter J. Isola Foundation to a drinks reception to celebrate this milestone. Prostate Cancer Gibraltar formally presented mementos to the various sponsors in appreciation of their invaluable support.
These commemorative plaques symbolise the gratitude of the charity and acknowledge the vital role each sponsor played in making the Robotic Surgery Project at GHA a reality.
The introduction of robotic surgery in Gibraltar represents a milestone for the GHA. It enhances surgical precision, potentially reduces recovery times, and ensures that patients can benefit from cutting-edge technology closer to home.
More importantly, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when government, healthcare professionals, charities and private sponsors work together with a shared vision.
