Cancer Relief Talk Highlights the Power of Physiotherapy and Prehabilitation for Prostate Cancer Patients At The Buddies Meeting
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar welcomed Jan Wink from Cancer Relief Gibraltar, who delivered an insightful talk on the vital role of physiotherapy and exercise in cancer treatment and recovery for Cancer Relief patients.
Jan explained how prostate cancer is now the most common cancer among men in the UK, with incidence expected to rise as populations live longer. Early detection remains essential, but preparing the body and mind for treatment is just as important.
She introduced the concept of prehabilitation — a three-pronged approach involving physiotherapy, nutritional support, and mental health counselling before beginning cancer treatment. Research shows that patients who undergo prehabilitation are fitter, recover more quickly, and manage treatment side effects better.

Jan also addressed some of the common side effects of hormone therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy treatment, including fatigue, bone density loss, weight gain, and muscle weakness. Regular exercise, tailored physiotherapy, and lifestyle changes can help patients counter these effects.
A key focus of the talk was the importance of pelvic floor exercises. Many prostate cancer patients experience incontinence and bladder control issues after surgery or treatment, but strengthening the pelvic floor can significantly improve recovery and quality of life. Jane offered practical tips and resources, encouraging patients to seek guidance early.
She concluded by emphasising that exercise doesn’t have to mean intensive workouts — even simple daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or home-based strength routines can make a real difference. “The stronger you are before and during treatment, the better you will cope with the challenges,” she noted.
Cancer Relief Gibraltar provides tailored physiotherapy and rehabilitation support for cancer patients locally. Jan encouraged members and families to explore the wide range of services available at the centre, highlighting that no one should face prostate cancer alone.
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cancer Relief Gibraltar and to Jan Wink for sharing their expertise, support, and dedication. We are deeply grateful for their continued collaboration and the vital services they provide to our community.
